Biography
Alexander Herman is the Director of the Institute of Art and Law. He writes a monthly art law column for The Art Newspaper and he has been quoted widely in the press on art law topics (e.g. Guardian, New York Times, Economist, Telegraph, ArtNET, Financial Times, Globe & Mail). His books include Restitution: The Return of Cultural Artefacts (Lund Humphries, 2021) and The Parthenon Marbles Dispute: Heritage, Law, Politics (Hart Publishing, 2023), with an upcoming commentary on the 1970 UNESCO Convention. His work has also been cited in the UK House of Lords and in an amicus curiae brief before the US Supreme Court. He is Programme Co-Director of the Art, Business and Law LLM run in partnership with the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London. He trained in both common law and civil law legal systems at McGill University and practised law in Montreal, Canada.
